History: Xenoblade Wiki: Mòrag's Page | Xenoblade 2's Page

Personality:

Mòrag is no-nonsense and strict military commander whose position in the Ardainian Empire, that of Special Inquisitor, is second only to that of the Emperor himself. She is straightforward and does not shy away from saying what she thinks, whether it means harshly berating people or complimenting them for a work well done. She will nearly always speak with impeccable manners and show due respect to those who deserve it, but the rank of the person she faces matters little if they prove themselves unworthy of her respect. She didn't hesitate to berate an influential Senator as his doings threatened peace nor did she ever hesitate to say a piece of her mind to Zeke whenever he overstepped his boundaries. Whether these should qualify as positive or negative traits greatly depends on the outlook of the person on the receiving end of her words.

And alas, the same holds true when she speaks to her friends. Lacking in the social skills necessary to speak to people on a casual level, she used to treat them the same as she would anyone else. And even though she has softened and improved in that regard, she is still clearly lacking in basic social skills. Overall, she is a calm and collected person. More often than not she thinks before speaking and acting, making her words all the harsher when she berates someone-- Or all the more motivating and kind when she speaks praises and encouragements. The only two that seem to be exempt of this behavior are Brighid and the Emperor. The former on the basis of being her Blade and arguably her best friend since childhood, the later on the basis of being her little brother. Yet even with these two she wasn't always so open, as will be mentioned later.

For the confidence and leadership she puts on display, Morag is far from being flawless. She has a strong sense of duty and she is dedicated: she will do whatever it takes to accomplish her missions. Whilst these definitely qualify as positives, they are subverted by the natural consequences of being such a duty-driven individual: sometimes she takes things too far. It may lead to her jumping hastily to conclusions or it may lead to her doing things others would see as being wrong. One such example is when she steps back and refuses to help Rex fight Zeke, because doing so would endanger peace between the Empire and Tantal, even though at this point she perceives Rex as a friend. Another natural conclusion of her strong sense of duty combined with her pride is how she hates being outdone. While this could arguably be a positive, in practice it is nearly always a negative as this leads her to doing things she would never have done otherwise. For example, her sense of humor downright sucks and being called out on it has often led to her trying to prove her detractors wrong-- With disastrous results that do little to help her reputation.

What all would agree are positives however, are her sense of justice and her care for her people. If she undertakes something, she will see it to the end. And unlike many in positions of powers, she always thinks of the people first. Over the course of the story, this softer side of her evolved, allowing her to be more open toward those she could call friends and family, such as Rex, Brighid and the Emperor. However for what growth she has gone through, Mòrag would still be considered to be a pretty distant person by most standards, even if she isn't nearly as closed off as she used to be. Prior to the beginning of her adventure, the only one she felt close to were Brighid and the Emperor, both of whom she treated with about the same manners and respect she did other people. Now, she is more relaxed and open around them.

Much of Mòrag's personality can be explained by her background. Raised to become the next ruler of the Empire, she was denied the throne when a male heir was born. She was still a child when it happened, yet she was old enough to understand the situation. Since then, Mòrag has struggled to find a meaning to her life. To try and find meaning, she decided to become her brother's retainer, and the station of High Inquisitor was created. Ever since then, she has always worked for the sake of the Empire with nary a thought for herself or her future.

Based on this bit of information, one could assume she is resentful toward her little brother and toward the system that denied her the throne. But the truth couldn't be more different. She cares for her brother more than she cares for anyone else and her loyalty to the Empire and its people is unwavering. And upon meeting Rex, she started questioning whether her life should be all about serving or if maybe there was something more for her. Whilst she still struggles to find a meaning, according to the words of Zeke, she has found it already even if she doesn't realize it.

Mòrag's position is one that results not only from her birthright but from her skill. She is a leader and fighter respected not only in the Empire but also outside of it, and for good reasons. Amongst the group, she is something of the tactician and her foresight has often saved the day. For example, when the group was depowered in Tantal and subsequently made prisoner, Mòrag had spotted ahead of time the means through which the King of Tantal meant to depower them. As such, she had planned to make sure they would have a way out. Not only did her planning allow the group to leave captivity without delay, but it also saved the life of one of theirs.

This is how Mòrag tends to face any delicate and negative scenarios: calmly and with a level-head. But even she isn't above snapping. In dire situations she has been seen to swear and even insult her enemies. One such example was when the party was defeated by Torna and Mikhail felt necessary to be a creeper and compliment her on her looks, resulting in Mòrag outright insulting her enemy. But for how shocking those outbursts are, they are very rare. To put it simply, they are tactical F-bombs meant to underline the gravity of the situation.
